Posted by – August 12, 2010

I created a separate page for my presentation at ProductCamp Austin Summer 2010 here so that I was able to share a URL at the the event.  Check out the deck and the notes that were captured during the session.

It was a blast working on the presentation with Bertrand and as to be expected, there were a ton of great sessions at the event.  Set your calendar for next the next ProductCamp Austin, January, 2011!

Almost Time For Product Camp

Posted by – August 6, 2010

Product Camp Austin is tomorrow and it is going to be a full house with 600 registrants.  I have been working on a session with Bertrand Hazard, VP of Product Marketing at Troux Technologies, on Product Marketing.  Here is the session outline:

How to be a Product Marketing Genius, Ninja, Guru, Rock Star, Wizard, [Insert Buzz Word Here] (Session #PE521)

There has never been a more rewarding, yet challenging time for Product Marketers to engage with customers. The social media world has opened a new land of opportunities to tell your story. The question however is where one should focus its efforts given limited time/resources to be the most effective? Led by two Product Marketing practitioners, this Town Hall discussion, will focus on the what’s working today and what to look for in the future. The presenters will give examples from the industry and their experience while highly encouraging audience participation.

We are planning for a lively discussion around product marketing and have some great examples to share plus a few surprises.  Hope to see you there!

Product Camp Austin Recap

Posted by – April 6, 2010

Sorry to say it, but if you missed last week’s Product Camp Austin, you missed a great conference. Where else can you see the likes of Tom Grant, Jon Gatrell, Paul Young, Bertrand HazardVicki Flaugher, Tom Evans, Scott Sehlhorst, Kevin Koym, Jose Briones, and many more talk about marketing, product development, and social media (ALL FOR FREE!).

The good news is a lot of the presentations are now on the ProductCamp Austin Slideshare group site and there will be another camp this year in early August.

Yours truly also presented this year on the topic of building your product story from the start of development.   I am attaching my slides below but without the audio, it doesn’t tell you much as a stand alone document.  My session was recorded so I will post a link once it is online to provide more context.

I had to leave before the last session was over so I didn’t get a chance to thank everyone that voted for me as the Best Presenter.  I was a worried at the start of the day that my presentation would not make the agenda so I am extremely honored to have won the award.  Many, many thanks!

ProductCamp Austin Spring 2010

Posted by – March 3, 2010

If you are going to be in Austin during the month of March, make sure to check out the upcoming ProductCamp.  Here is a summary of the product camp concept:

ProductCamp is a collaborative, user organized unconference, focused on Product Marketing and Management topics. At ProductCamp everyone participates: by presenting, leading a roundtable discussion, helping with logistics, securing sponsorship, or volunteering. ProductCamp is a great opportunity for you to learn from, teach to, and network with professionals involved in the Product Management, Marketing, and Development process from the Austin area!

I had an opportunity to attend the first product camp and led a session at the second (here’s my presentation).  Both camps were filled with insightful sessions, great discussions, and wonderful people.  I highly recommend attending (you can register now) if you are interested in product management and product marketing.

I am working on a session for the next camp and have an outline started for review.  The idea behind my presentation was an event that happened about a year and a half ago.  A product I was working on was getting ready to launch and through a series of unfortunate events, was almost canceled at the last minute.

My plan is to share how we recovered from this situation and some practical ideas that you can use during product development to increase your chance of success.

Product Potluck January 2010

Posted by – January 25, 2010

Product Potluck is a monthly gathering of product managers here in Austin, TX.  The event starts with an hour of networking during which time you get to enjoy a beverage and vote on the topics for the night.

Usually there are 3-4 speakers who have prepared material and the two with the top votes win.  The best part of Product Potluck is the collaboration that occurs during the presentation.  Attendees are encouraged to share their own expertise and experience.  The shared discussion is packed with information and usually very entertaining.

Have been meaning to post this one from a while, my presentation from Product Camp Austin on Product Management.  The session was a lessons learned  discussion covering customer research, innovation, communications, positioning, politics, delivering results, and other good stuff to know.  The deck is mostly for talking points but there were notes taken during the session posted on the Product Camp wiki here.
